You could not have made a more vanilla hire. On the heels of what Colorado just did ( for better or worse ) this hire does not move the needle one bit. Zero recruits just said "oh boy Stanford hired Troy Taylor" and zero people in this lightly supported football area ran to the ticket office to get season tickets. The basketball program is stuck in the mud and football has entered that.
Mind you Sac st just gave up 66 points to a school called Incarnate Word ( true story )

Why does anyone care about this? Is Stanford an educational institution or a sports club?

To be taken seriously as a football college, Stanford needs a big name coach with a noteworthy resume and an established record of success on the national level.
Jim Harbaugh, Denny Green, and Bill Walsh met that criteria and built successful Stanford football teams.
There is no reason for a gifted high school recruit with NFL ambitions to even consider Stanford nowadays.
That consideration is best reserved for football universities like Oregon, USC, UCLA, and even UC Berkeley which has a track record for turning out prominent NFL quarterbacks.
The glory days of John Elway and Christian McCaffrey are not returning for a long time.
