Woman killed by falling tree at Rancho San Antonio

A hiker died at Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve in Cupertino Sunday morning when a tree fell on her, the Santa Clara County Fire Department reported.

An unfortunate tragedy, for sure. But a good reminder not to use headphones/earbuds while out on the trails. Maybe in this case she wasn't wearing any; we don't know. But I do know that not wearing them lessens the risk of accidents like this. Because I've had a couple of close calls during my decades of hiking and backpacking, and hearing that snap allowed me to avoid injury.
