To see how the BEMU (battery-electric multiple unit) hybrid drive concept works with Stader’s “FLIRT Akku” (“Akku” is the common abbreviation for “battery” in German) single-deck train model, see their product web page and its embedded video here: Web Link
Stadler alone has already taken orders for (or delivered) well over 100 such BEMU trainsets, primarily in Europe.
The “KISS” double-deck BEMU train Stadler will develop for Caltrain will work in the same way, but it will be designed, tested & certified for use in the US by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) so that other agencies around the state and US can order and use the same train in order to dramatically cut their carbon (and other) emissions.
