Opinion: How Cubberley reshaped school — and us

In the late '60s, social and political storms turned Cubberley High School into a crucible of activism. This weekend, as the Class of ’71 gathers for a delayed 50th reunion, I’m thinking about how extraordinary Cubberley was.

Idea Forum was an earlier 1967 Cubberley student-led breakaway from factory forced schooling:

Today, the DeCal Program is an aggregate of student-run courses at the University of California, Berkeley – here, students create and facilitate their own classes on a variety of subjects, many of which are not addressed in the traditional curriculum:
