99-year-old World War II veteran, Palo Alto resident to be honored at Veterans Day event

Before he was ringing up your painting supplies at the now-closed Peninsula Hardware, Charles Scott started his working life doing a very different job: He was a radio operator for the U.S. Navy.

We need to hear these stories. We need to honor these heroes. Teach their memories to our children and our grandchildren. Let our schoolchildren hear of what those just a little older than themselves fought for our freedoms, our liberties, our futures. And if we don't, who will?

I'm delighted but not surprised that he mentioned his ties to Covenant Presbyterian Church. His friends in the Covenant community are immensely proud of him and fond of him, a rock-solid example of common sense, decency, and concern for those around him.

He sounds like a wonderful person! I, too, had my early schooling on Kodiak Island. The Kodiak bears were huge, and the blueberries on nearby Afognak Island were so delicious. Thank you for telling us about this nice man.
