This is utter incompetence on the part of the Palo Alto Police Department. I was intimately involved in this accident - I was not hit, but they could not have come closer to me. There were two cars joyriding North on Alma, beginning south of Arastradero, and ending at the intersection of California and Alma, where one car crashed and the other obviously escaped (it was a blue sedan). They were playing chase with each other, at speeds easily exceeding 100mph into the lanes of oncoming South Bound traffic. They hit at least 5 cars, and it was only a miracle that no one was killed. To say this was a 'single car that drifted into the other lane' is utter bullshit (sorry, but this is really aggravating). I described this in detail to an officer at the site, who frankly just seemed bored and wanted to get back to the station. This is also bad journalism - why did it take you this long to report on this story?

I had lunch with a friend Tuesday who brought up this incident, having witnessed it. He told me he had seen 2 cars racing or chasing each other at a very high speed, just as the above commenter reports.

I came on this accident shortly after it happened driving northbound on Alma, and was able to detour onto Oregon Expy. It was rainy and the roads were slick, so driving was more dangerous that day. I hope the courts take the full evidence and and sentence this guy (and the other driver if they can find them) to what he deserves. I'm sorry for the other drivers and hope for their full recovery.

Alma Raceway is what it really is. From East Charleston to Churchill, I’ve seen cars race alone at speeds over 70. Why? Because they can. It’s one stretch that has no crossing intersections to slow traffic, and no law enforcement. (Pre-pandemic,
a police cruiser lurked in a lot just south of Oregon and was a great deterrent.) Now, Alma is a speedway compared to El. Camino and it is only going to get worse. Especially Teslas are seen virtually out of no where because of unbelievable acceleration; your’re driving at the 35 limit with no one behind you and then —pop—
They are on your tail like a jet fighter at quick 75, then guiltily decelerate as quickly. . This thrills them, and scares the crap out of me. No police enforcement whatsoever. Tesla drivers seem to have immunity and carte Blanche entitlement to make their own law. (Not all, I know, but enough to give them that characterization). I would gladly pay a tax increase to fund more police traffic enforcement.
