This has been a beautiful program. For the Sanctuary City.
I remember when it was located in the "Whiskey Gulch" area.
Complaints were made about all the donations that could be seen by passing Cars off of the University loop.
EHP is the only visual of the surviving nature of the former City. Except for the 43 Churches. Feeding the low-income and homeless. It is just too bad that the city Leaders only want to cater to and be a Sanctuary City. Leaving the Middle class to run and find shelters elsewhere. The Leaders haven't seen fit to return all those 200 Black-owned and female-owned Businesses. Those businesses helped fund EHP in the declining days. Naida Butler is a Saint.
Just to reiterate. I am Glad EHP found a home. But the same should have been looked towards all those displaced Black Businesses. The current EHP is serving the current Demographic catered to by Carlos Romero and Ruben Abrica and they are unapologetic in their looking out for their people(voters). Housing is the other recourse that the duo has sought. But NOT for the African Americans who struggled and kept the City alive in the dark days. NO African Americans are living at the 'Nugent" Center. Nor or they seek out in returning to the the city that they help stay alive. Forced out.
Only to allow the Gentrificaters to arrive and take over.
This should be addressed, sooner rather than later.
East Palo Alto has a total of 114 to 140 Non-profits that survive off of the 2.5-mile city.
That's 214 people aided by the Nonprofits each.
I am All for feeding people and keeping them Healthy. I am sure that there are some "Grifters".
And let's not forget that there are other Churches and The Senior Center. All of them take in donations from outside. Also, let's not forget that NOT all E. Palo Altona's are poor. This is why EHP can "Help" the other cities that have friends, and family in the adjacent cities. Of Redwood City, Menlo Park, and Mt. View. A very high fast-growing population.
